How do US and ISO 8601 week numbering rules fundamentally differ?

US and ISO 8601 week numbering differ in two basic ways: the first day of the week and the rule for naming Week 1. Under ISO 8601, weeks begin on Monday, and Week 1 is the first week with at least four days in the new year, which is the same as the week containing the first Thursday of January.

In the US system, weeks typically begin on Sunday, and Week 1 is simply the week that includes January 1. Because of that, dates around New Year’s can fall into different week numbers under the two systems.

Why does the year 2026 contain 53 weeks instead of 52?

2026 does not literally have 53 full weeks; it has 365 days, which is 52 weeks plus 1 day. The idea of “53 weeks” comes from week numbering systems, not from the year being longer.

Under ISO 8601, a common year that starts on a Thursday is assigned 53 numbered weeks, and 2026 fits that rule. So no extra week is added to the calendar; the week count simply goes up to Week 53 because of how the dates fall.

How many weeks are in the 2027 calendar for US and ISO systems?

In one common US calendar convention, weeks start on Sunday, and the week that contains January 1 is treated as Week 1. Under that method, 2027 has 53 labeled weeks in US week numbering, while ISO 8601 counts 52 numbered weeks.

What is the mathematical “First Thursday” rule used in ISO 8601?

The “First Thursday” rule determines which week is counted as ISO Week 1. Under ISO 8601, Week 1 is the week that contains the first Thursday of January. Because a week has seven days, this ensures that Week 1 belongs to the year containing the majority of that week’s days.

This is equivalent to the following definitions:

  1. The first week with at least four days in January.
  2. The week that contains January 4.
  3. The week that starts on the Monday closest to January 1.

For 2026, January 1 falls on a Thursday. That means the week from Monday, December 29, 2025, to Sunday, January 4, 2026 contains four days in 2026, so it is classified as ISO Week 1 of 2026. By contrast, when January 1 falls on a Friday, that opening week is assigned to Week 53 of the previous ISO year.

Which countries use Saturday or Sunday as the first day of the week?
  • Sunday Start: United States, Canada, Mexico, much of South America, Japan, South Korea, and the Philippines.
  • Monday Start: Almost all of Europe, China, Russia, and most of Africa.
  • Saturday Start: Many Middle Eastern and Islamic countries, including Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Iran, and Iraq. In these regions, Friday is the primary day of worship and rest, making Saturday the logical start of the workweek.
